Certain networking and security virtualization features can currently be deployed independent of the VMware NSX functionality by using the Edge Gateway component, which is controlled and deployed by vCloud Director in legacy compatibility mode. As shown in the following figure, the Edge Gateway can support the interconnectivity of the virtual machines that are connected through the VXLAN-backed infrastructure. This infrastructure is the Org VDC Network – VXLAN500x connected to the physical northbound L3/L2 network through a VLAN-backed infrastructure (vCloud Director External Network VLAN 101).
