VMware introduced storage clusters and VM Storage Profiles in previous versions of vSphere, but vCloud Director was not able to consume them.

As of vCloud Director 5.1 you can expose VM Storage Profiles inside vCloud Director virtual datacenters, thus allowing the end user to choose from multiple tiers of storage within the same virtual datacenter.

Figure 29 shows a high level architecture that illustrates how vCloud Director can map these features that are available in the core platform.
